Purpose

This folder records the completed design-consistency initiative that brought the primary public pages of Just A Thought Blog into one coordinated visual and brand system without making every page look identical.

The Home page established the primary visual direction. Resources demonstrated how that direction could adapt to an interior landing page. The remaining pages now share the same typography, colors, spacing, component language, navigation, footer, responsive behavior, dark-mode principles, and accessibility expectations while retaining page-specific structure and purpose.

This is now a completed project record and current design reference, not an active work queue.

Historical Planning Record

WORK-ITEMS.md preserves the original scope and acceptance criteria as a historical planning artifact. Its unchecked boxes are not the current project status. Completed implementation and validation are recorded in the changelog, decision log, individual DS notes, merged pull requests, and final QA notes.

Page Archetypes

The site uses three related page families.

1. Editorial Landing Pages

Pages: Home, Resources, Series, Podcast

Shared characteristics:

  • 1280px editorial board container
  • Framed split hero where appropriate
  • Small uppercase kicker
  • Playfair Display page title
  • Muted-gold and olive divider treatment
  • Editorial photography
  • Modular bordered sections
  • Page-specific cards and content patterns

2. Collection and Utility Pages

Pages: Posts, Search, Listen

Shared characteristics:

  • Compact editorial or functional hero
  • Strong information hierarchy
  • Wider content area
  • Consistent archive, result, or reflection cards
  • Search, filters, sorting, pagination, or playback controls where appropriate
  • Less decorative content than editorial landing pages

3. Narrative and Profile Pages

Pages: About, Professional Background

Shared characteristics:

  • Personal or contextual hero
  • Comfortable reading width
  • Wider visual sections between narrative passages
  • Pull quotes, profile facts, and supporting images
  • Clear relationship between Jeff Thomas III and the Just A Thought publication

The Contact page remains an inherited utility page and should be included in future legacy-template cleanup rather than forced into an unrelated archetype.

Current Design Principles

  • Consistency does not mean sameness.
  • Shared components should support page purpose rather than erase it.
  • The Home page is the visual baseline, not a template to duplicate literally.
  • Resources remains the preferred example for adapting the Home system to an interior landing page.
  • About should remain personal and reflective rather than résumé-like.
  • The site should feel warm, editorial, peaceful, mature, and uncluttered.
  • Typography, spacing, navigation, buttons, colors, borders, focus states, and responsive behavior should be predictable.
  • Planned features should be described honestly and should not look active before they exist.
  • Legacy cleanup must be evidence-based and must not trade small file-size gains for avoidable regressions.
  • Reader-facing language should remain reflective, compassionate, biblically grounded, and human.

Future Maintenance

Future visual or structural changes should:

  1. Begin from the shared tokens and components in _sass/design-system.scss and _sass/page-archetypes.scss.
  2. Preserve the assigned page archetype or document why a different structure is necessary.
  3. Validate desktop, tablet, mobile, light mode, and dark mode.
  4. Confirm keyboard focus, heading order, link purpose, image alternatives, and readable contrast.
  5. Avoid introducing new overlapping component or token systems.
  6. Update current documentation when the implementation changes.
  7. Record significant decisions in DECISIONS.md.

A separate inherited-template and legacy-CSS reduction project may eventually cover Contact, post layouts, utility templates, and broad Clean Blog dependencies. That work should be tested as its own coordinated initiative.
